Preparation/Installation/Maintenance
Prepare the Soil
The better prepared your soil is, the better your turf will perform.
- Get rid of any existing weeds and grasses, using a weed and grass killer. Follow package directions.
- Rototill soil so that you have a minimum of 2 inches of good, loose top soil (4" to 6" is ideal).
- Soil test your lawn. See your area County Extension agent for information on how to test your lawn. You may need to add lime, peat or compost as recommended.
- Rake and smooth soil, removing rocks, roots and large clods. Keep the grade 1" below sidewalks, driveway, etc.
Turf Installation
- Install your turf immediately upon delivery. Turf is a living plant that requires ground contact and moisture to survive.
- Begin installing turf along the longest, straight line, such as a driveway or sidewalk.
- Butt and push edges and ends against each other tightly, without stretching.
- Avoid gaps or overlaps.
- Stagger the joints in each row in a brick like fashion.
- Use a sharp utility knife to trim corners and ends.
- On slopes, place turf pieces across the slope.
- WATER! WATER! WATER!
Watering Your Turf
- Water your new lawn within 1/2 hour of installation.
- Water daily - to the point of saturation - for the first two weeks.
- After two weeks, begin less frequent and deeper watering.
- Weather conditions will dictate the amount and frequency of watering.
- Be certain that your new lawn has enough moisture to survive hot, dry or windy periods.
- More water will be needed near buildings, where heat is reflected.
